Wow, so far I have decided that I want to stay on the road forever, roadschool the kids and go wherever the sun shines. I doubt that the kids would agree to this and I know that their dad would let that happen over his cold dead body.
We are on day two of putting the Focus to the road and we have managed to get all the way across Washington state…about 600 km. We are really taking our time but I still had to explain to Hanna that if we only drove an hour each day this trip would take a month, more for pee breaks (and we take a lot.)
Day one of our Journey was a whole lot of frustrating errand running. I had an appointment in the morning so we didn’t leave Vancouver until after 2pm. Our wait at the border was painless but we had lots of things to pick up in Bellingham, almost everything is less expensive in the USA than it is in Canada and there are always more interesting things in American grocery stores. Like Pancake Batter in an aerosol can. Really, they have that.
We Finally arrived to Lake Easton State Park shortly after 9:00. Nobody in our group was happy to be setting up our tent in the dark while being eaten alive by mosquitoes; we had a family fight, made up and got down to work. We all slept like rocks.
I was up with the birds at 5:00 am. Actually I was up at 5 because of the birds…but I was able to clean up our site and tidy the car before the kids woke up. We had Aerosol Pancakes for breakfast, and you might be surprised to learn that they are pretty darn good. So good that I am going to start looking for all of my foods to come in a can.
Day two saw us on the road by 9:45 with a 4ish hour drive to Spokane. I had been thinking of this Washington State drive as a part of the journey necessary in order to get to the rest of it…I had no idea what the part of Washington East of Seattle looked like. I was gaping when we crossed over the Cascade Mountains to the Columbia River Plateau. I wasn’t expecting such a transition between rain forest and arid, rolling hills.
Along the way Hanna and I were amazed with these short scrubby bushes.
Finally after 32oz of water hit my bladder I needed to go, and I needed to go NOW. I pulled on to a service road and hid behind the car to pee and could smell sage…they were sagebushes, I picked some to freshen up the Focus which was beginning to smell like Kool-aid and Nacho chips.
Here are the kids, right now…in the Pool at the Spokane KOA. The owners here are FANTASTIC, so nice. We have a very nice site near the pool.
Tomorrow we start climbing the Rocky Mountains and head to Whitehall, Montana! Really excited about this part of the trip!

Is that sage not *incredible!*? we had the same experience on our final day (after 10 days in the car!) rolling down the windows and smelling that beautiful, deep scent.
Also, I bet there is no end to foods you can find in spray can form. That was so funny!
